According to several sources, the first update to the iPhone 3.0 software should be hitting our iPhones soon. Though most of the updates are for the 3GS, everyone will receive an update to the modem’s firmware, a few other API updates/enhancements, and if AT&T cooperates, fully functional MMS. The 3GS will now be able to be voice controlled through a Bluetooth headset, and editing video now saves an additional copy, (instead of writing over the original). Also, if you have modified your iPhone in any way beware of this update, as the baseband firmware will not be at version 5.08.01, adding the possibility of making your iPhone brick if you aren’t careful.

Though there is not release date, we expect it by the end of July as Apple promised that we’d get MMS by “the end of the summer”.

And one more thing; is Apple really not going to enable Voice Control for 3G users as well? Especially now that it can be controlled by a Bluetooth headset, this is a minor software update if anything because the hardware support is already there. Apple is keeping Voice Control to the 3GS solely to push more units – that’s not too cool if you ask me.
